For eight years, Lise and her young grandson were caught in a transient lifestyle, forced to live in shoddy, unsafe rentals. By 2014, their unit was condemned and they were homeless for 86 days. They relied on a tent and a family homeless shelter while waiting for a subsidized housing unit.
Through Aspen, the two were able to reach their goal of stable housing in a community where they can receive the strong supports required for a child with complex medical and mental health needs as well as Lise’s medical disability.
Aspen’s programs provided the support and advocacy needed to break down the barriers they faced. As Lise puts it: “Without Aspen’s strong support for our family’s journey, I would not have my grandchild today.”
Lisa and her grandson can now look forward to their next journey: adoption.
