Foster Care
"Fostering is not about saving a child. It's about doing the best I can for someone and watching them grow into themselves."

quick facts
  • Aspen has the largest non-government foster care program in Calgary.
  • In 2007, 143 children were cared for in Aspen's foster homes.
  • There are more than 40 foster homes operating throughout Calgary.
  • Foster parents receive more than 130 hours of training each year.

Aspen is one of Calgary's leading providers of foster care services. We believe that each child deserves a safe, warm, and healthy home, which in some cases cannot be provided by their biological family. Foster homes support children and youth as they develop new skills and explore exciting opportunities - while participating in a positive family experience.

Aspen caseworkers are involved in all aspects of the process. We screen and train prospective foster parents; then work to find the best match between the foster child and foster family. Foster parents receive ongoing training and support to further enhance their understanding of child development and the needs of children.

Ultimately, foster homes prepare children and youth to eventually return to their biological family or other permanent homes. In some cases, there are longer-term arrangements where children stay until they are ready to pursue independence as an adult.
